You've probably seen the meme in your Facebook feed. It goes something like this: "Did you ever wonder what you would have done if you lived in 1930s Germany? Well, now is your chance to find out."
Now is the time for all of us to find out what we are capable of doing. Will we simply treat 2016 like any other election? Or will we rise up, make our voices heard, and reclaim our democracy?
Whether it's marching for justice, calling elected officials, packing town hall meetings, or flooding the statehouse to express our views, we all have a role to play in ensuring that the next four years don't take our country backwards on the road to economic and social justice. I am currently exploring whether my role in that effort might be as a congressional candidate in Iowa's Third District. As an openly bisexual woman I have lived through hate, I have lived through the fear of losing my job, I have lived through having the closest person in my life be legally considered a stranger. I won't go back. WE won't go back.
Democratic values and the freedoms guaranteed in our Constitution need leaders who will fight to preserve them. We need to pursue policies that promote economic justice for everyone, not just the wealthy. Our laws need to uphold the dignity and equality of all people.
Harvey Milk famously said, “I know that you can’t live on hope alone, but without it, life is not worth living.” Now is not a time to lose hope; we need to believe that together we can change the world. But hope alone is not enough. Now is a time to transform hope into action.
Here are some ways you can help me turn hope into action:
Raise your voice - Help me keep congressional phonelines ringing off the hook by signing up for my action alerts. I will let you know when the U.S. House of Representatives is taking action and needs to hear your voice. You will receive a brief email or text informing you of the alert with a link taking you to a description of what is happening, a short suggested script, and phone numbers. All you have to do is dial.
Volunteer - Elections are all about teamwork. If you're interested volunteering to help out while I make my decision, sign up below.
Donate - Are you ready to make a financial contribution? Don't! Not yet, anyway. I won't do any fundraising until I make a final decision. In the meantime, I encourage you to make a donation to an organization that is already on the ground fighting. Planned Parenthood and the ACLU are on the front lines, but they are not the only ones fighting, so find an organization and give them your support.
